The oil and natural
gas projects demand exploration / production geophysicists who work in
collaboration with geologists in the oil projects. The main task of a
geophysicist is to identify areas containing oil. It helps to determine the
position of the tanks, to measure their depth, quantify their volume.
A geophysicist studies the structure and composition of the soil and subsoil of the Earth, and also evaluates them. There is a lot for a geophysicist to build up oil careers. It’s the geophysicist’s task to make use of methods from physical science and mathematics, such as analysis of the wave propagation (seismology), the magnetic field (geomagnetism), the gravity field (gravity), etc.
The geophysicists are mainly involved in the exploration of an area and they probe the ground based gravity surveys (gravity field) and magnetic surveys (magnetic field). The most used method is the seismic reflection, pneumatic vibrators for generating weak shocks in the basement, and sensors for recording data.
A geophysicist works with geologist’s interpretation, and evaluates the data, the nature of risks and uncertainties. Another job of a geophysicist is to process the retrieved data from the seismic reflection technique. On land or sea, the data is processed directly at the point of acquisition.
The reservoir geophysicist is responsible for determining the size and shape of the hydrocarbon reservoir (delineation), whose role is in limelight after the discovery is made. A reservoir geophysicist optimizes the knowledge of the field and proposes the drilling of more wells to improve performance.
The research and development geophysicist creates new techniques for exploration and oil production to improve methods and tools, and can also propose the use of new software for data interpretation, new methods of modeling and imaging etc. The above discussed works are certain tasks of a geophysicist to build up careers in oil .
